Re-Thinking Poverty Event 5/24, Miami

Attention all who care about Miami

If you are interested in the well-being of our Miami communities, we cordially invite you to an engaging and informative evening dedicated to re-thinking some of the issues surrounding poverty .

When: Thursday, May 24th, 6:30 – 9:00 pm

Where: Trinity International University 9010 SW 137 Ave. Miami, FL 33186

Who’s Invited:
Anyone who cares about our city and who’d like to explore new approaches to create a more flourishing Miami. If you serve in business, education, a non-profit, faith or community- based group, law enforcement, government or any other sector of Miami, please join us.

Note: This is a free event and dinner, networking and resources are included.

What to Expect:
As we share a meal and networking together, we'll view "Poverty Inc.," a gripping and award-winning documentary that boldly challenges contemporary approaches to global charity (with clear implications for relief and charitable efforts in Miami, our state and nation)

The Problem: Most contemporary relief and charity efforts create results that are at best mixed and in many cases negative. Those we intend to help are often harmed in the process.

It’s Time to “re-think” Poverty: Drawing on perspectives gathered from over 150 interviews in 20 countries, captured over 4 years, the film explores the often hidden side of “doing good”. The central thesis of the film is not to discourage giving, but rather to demonstrate how our current charity efforts most often fail the very individuals they purpose to assist.

Solutions Needed: Providing an honest look at modern approaches to helping others, Poverty Inc. focuses on promoting partnering entrepreneurship as a compelling alternative to encouraging and assisting impoverished communities.

Time to Reflect and Share: Then, as we close our time together, we'll consider some steps we could take, individually and collectively, as we move forward to help create flourishing neighborhoods (at home or abroad) with more effective and sustainable ways to truly encourage and empower others.

Sound interesting? We hope you’ll join us !
